Go Genting

Everyone in Malaysia knows Uncle Lim. He is the founder and honorary life president of Genting Group, who passed away at 11.20am Tuesday at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre. This tycoon was renowned for his vision in transforming Genting Highlands from an unexplored hilltop to one of the world's most successful casino resorts.

His life is a legend to the Malaysian Chinese because he was only 19 with a small suitcase and US$175, when he migrated from China. Thanks to his brilliant idea, to date, Genting Highlands Resort has five hotels and two apartment blocks at the hilltop and Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort.

According to Forbes Asia, the Genting Group founder was third richest in the country with a net worth of US$4.3bil (RM14.6bil). I truly believe that 50% of the amount was coming from the casino. For Malaysian, Genting is the only legal place that we can gamble freely. You can see the crowd especially during the festive season, like Chinese New Year. I used to be one of them queuing long way from the hill foot and jam until the hilltop just for the sake of trying my luck. Somehow, the trend is changing. As there are many online casino over the internet, we are no longer needed to climb all the way just for trying.

Anyhow, we will still go Genting once a while. After all that is the place where we grow together.
